Devlog 0 - Getting Started
After several years of working in private on what I consider to be for all intents and purposes my dream game, I've decided to finally open the doors and reach out to the community at large about Synthaar. There's a lot of work left to be done for sure, but as time grew on, I realized that the anxiety of anticipation and the endless requirements for "what is good enough" would ultimately roadblock me from finally taking that all important step that is critical in a game's lifecycle; going public.
So what is Synthaar, and what does it aim to be? For years I have been a major fan of wonderful franchises such as The Sims, Crusader Kings, and Rimworld. While each of these games are titans in their own right, I have always found them to be "not quite" precisely what I would look for in my "perfect" game. In The Sims by Maxis, the game focuses on the story of your Sim and his or her family, but their impact on the world at large is minimal, if not outright non-existent. In Paradox's Crusader Kings, a wonderful tale of acquiring power and tailoring your legacy provides eons of entertainment, but it is difficult to get a true experience of starting from nothing, and exploring the new world your intrigue and conquest has shaped. In Ludeon Studio's Rimworld, fascinating dynamic stories play out as you build your colony, but the game's emphasis on survival in a frontier can leave one yearning for a more complex society to play with, and enjoy the fruits of peace as well as turmoil.
Synthaar aims to follow your characters on a more personal level, watch them live, grow, pass on what they've learned, and die. Your characters can leave a mark on the world, and leave behind a legacy to continue their goals, or even subvert them. You can build your way up from nothing, choose to take a simple profession, or give in to your ambitions and rule the galaxy with benevolence or tyranny. The galaxy will ebb and flow with or without your input, making sure that no two games ever play out exactly the same.
For most of its development up until now, Synthaar has been about building the foundation for which everything will be built upon. The first priorities were establishing a galaxy that could generate procedural worlds, accommodate new construction, and interesting dynamic characters. Now, the game is at a stage where the game loop is forming and solidifying, but in order to refine and polish the intricate design of a life simulator, play testing must be done. With the game in its current state, and unable to deliver on its promises right this moment, I want to offer a preview Demo alongside the purchasable game. Until the game can deliver its key points in gameplay, this demo will remain up to date with the paid version of the game. Purchasing the game at this time helps support its development, and will allow access to the game once it begins to exceed the demo going into Alpha at a future date.
Thank you for your interest in Synthaar, I suggest you keep up with us by following us on Itch.io, Reddit, and our Discord. If you find that our state of game is a bit too rough for your liking, but find Synthaar speaks to your particular gaming interests, I happily invite you to take your time, keep your ear to the ground, and I hope to show you what I have in store!
